Myanmar Soldiers Returned Home After Fleeing to Mizoram, India
Over 150 Myanmar soldiers who sought refuge in Mizoram following the takeover of their camps by pro-democracy ethnic groups were flown back to Myanmar on a military aircraft facilitated by New Delhi. The soldiers, part of Myanmar’s ‘Tatmadaw’, fled their camps near the Indo-Myanmar border after clashes with the Arakan Army fighters.
Arriving from Mandalay, Myanmar, the military aircraft landed at Mizoram’s Lengpui airport and carried out two flights, transporting a total of 151 soldiers back to Akyab, Myanmar. On December 29, these soldiers, who crossed into Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district with their arms, sought assistance from the Assam Rifles after their camp was overrun by the Arakan Army.
While in the custody of the Assam Rifles at Parva in Lawngtlai, the Myanmarese soldiers received medical aid for critical injuries sustained during their escape. Talks between the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Myanmar’s military government were underway, leading to the soldiers’ repatriation to their homeland.
Earlier incidents in November saw 104 soldiers from Myanmar fleeing to Mizoram in phases after their border camps were overtaken by pro-democracy groups. These soldiers were airlifted by the Indian Air Force to Moreh in Manipur and then crossed the international border into Tamu, Myanmar.
Myanmar has faced unrest since the military coup in 2021, seizing power from the Aung San Suu Kyi-led government. This abrupt shift disrupted the nation’s democratic progress, spurring resistance from pro-democracy groups, ethnic minorities, and armed militias against the military junta’s rule.
The military junta faces severe resistance from these groups, including a parallel government formed by pro-democracy figures that aims to contest the military’s authority. This movement, backed by insurgent factions, launched a “Road to Naypyitaw” campaign, aspiring to take control of the capital city, Naypyitaw.
