Nokia’s Financial Targets Fall Short as License Renewal Talks Extend
Finnish telecom giant Nokia has announced that it will not meet its full-year financial targets due to ongoing discussions on license renewals. The company cited the inability to recognize revenue from these negotiations, which are expected to extend into the next year. Nokia’s full-year outlook hinges on the closure of outstanding license renewals in its technology unit, Nokia Technologies. Unfortunately, the company did not disclose details about the licenses or the parties involved in the renewal talks.
Extended Negotiations Push Resolution to 2024, Impacting 2023 Performance
Nokia anticipates that the license renewal negotiations will not conclude before the year-end, with a resolution now expected in 2024. This delay is projected to impact the company’s financial performance in the coming year. Nokia’s patent portfolio, built on a significant investment in research and development, includes over 20,000 patents, with more than 5,500 deemed essential to 5G technology. Earlier this year, Nokia secured a new long-term patent license agreement with Apple, replacing the expiring agreement at the end of 2023.
Despite Nokia’s efforts, the company has faced challenges in key markets like North America, where slowing sales of 5G equipment have compressed profit margins. The recent decision by AT&T to choose Ericsson over Nokia for a $14 billion, five-year telecom network deal further exacerbated Nokia’s position in the North American market. Nokia reported a 20% decline in third-quarter sales, prompting the company to reevaluate its full-year 2023 targets for net sales, comparable operating margin, and free cash flow.
Nokia aims to demonstrate a significant improvement in net sales for its network businesses in the fourth quarter. However, uncertainties linger as the company faces the consequences of market dynamics and strives to achieve its financial goals. Nokia is scheduled to report its quarterly and full-year results on January 25.
