Bengaluru’s Suburban Rail Project Advances with Larsen & Toubro’s Contract for Kanaka Line
A significant stride in Bengaluru’s suburban rail initiative emerged as Larsen & Toubro secured a Rs 1,040 crore contract from KRIDE for constructing the pivotal 46-km Kanaka Line. This component involves the design and establishment of an elevated viaduct and at-grade tracks, boosting the city’s public transportation network.
The Connectivity Plan
Connecting Heelalige to Rajanukunte, the Kanaka Line (Corridor-4) encompasses elevated and ground-level stretches. Notably, a double-decker viaduct near Yelahanka is slated, offering a distinctive feature as it intersects with Corridor-1. The stations strategically positioned along this line will cater to multiple neighborhoods and facilitate seamless interchanges with the Bengaluru Metro and other transit systems.
Advancement in Public Transit
This contract marks a significant leap in the 149-km Bengaluru suburban rail project sanctioned by the Union government in October 2020. The aim for completion by 2028 underscores its role in augmenting the city’s public transportation infrastructure. Backed financially by global entities such as KfW, Germany, and the European Investment Bank, the project promises enhanced commuter facilities.
Future Trajectory
The commencement of construction on the Kanaka Line signifies nearly half of the civil work awarded for the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project. Anticipated tenders for Corridor-1 and Corridor-3 are expected imminently, further expediting the project’s trajectory. This expansive suburban rail network’s development not only amplifies Bengaluru’s internal connectivity but also acts as a catalyst for the city’s socio-economic expansion.
