Mehbooba Mufti Barred from Meeting Victims Families in Poonch, Sparks Controversy
Mehbooba Mufti, the chief of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), faced obstruction by the police on DKG road in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, while attempting to visit the families of victims in the aftermath of an anti-terror operation. Her supporters engaged in a scuffle with the police, resulting in a protest staged by Mufti and her followers due to their dissatisfaction with the situation.
Mufti expressed discontent over the imposed restrictions, highlighting the allowance granted to leaders of other political parties to visit the area. She questioned the purported threat, suggesting that the real motive might be to conceal certain information. Mufti’s remarks pointed towards a bias in allowing access to certain leaders while denying it to others.
The Indian Army initiated an inquiry into the deaths of three civilians in the Poonch-Rajouri sector following a militant attack on army personnel on December 21, resulting in the loss of four soldiers. Amid a surge in attacks on troops, the Indian Army plans to bolster troop numbers in the Poonch-Rajouri sector to counter the activities of Pakistani terrorists.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with the families of the deceased civilians, assuring them of justice. Noor Mohammad, the victim’s brother, conveyed Singh’s commitment to ensuring justice and hoped for a fair resolution. Mohamad Sadiq, the victim’s uncle, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of timely justice delivery and welcoming Singh’s visit as a gesture of assurance.
