PM-Modi Announces End of Article-370, Asserts Autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh; Supreme Court Backs Government’s Move
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized that Article 370 is a thing of the past, affirming that the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh now have the autonomy to determine their destinies independently. During an interview with India Today, the Prime Minister underscored his unwavering commitment to prioritizing the nation’s interests throughout his tenure as a BJP worker, Chief Minister, and Prime Minister.
Highlighting the government’s comprehensive strategy for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, he stated that the region is progressing towards sustainable peace, stability, and prosperity. In response to a question about the Supreme Court’s ruling on Article 370, he remarked, “With Article 370 gone forever, the people of J-K and Ladakh, for the first time, are free to shape their destinies with their own hands.”
The Prime Minister outlined the government’s multifaceted approach, focusing on security, development, investment in infrastructure, human capital, and the thorough restructuring of government processes through reforms. He emphasized the commitment to ensuring lasting peace, stability, and prosperity by enhancing living standards, fostering economic growth, and creating employment opportunities in the region.
The Supreme Court, earlier this month, upheld the Union Government’s decision to revoke Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi celebrated the court’s decision, describing it as a historic affirmation of hope, progress, and unity for the residents of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
“The Supreme Court verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 is historic and constitutionally upholds the decision taken by the Parliament of India on 5th August 2019; it is a resounding declaration of hope, progress, and unity for our sisters and brothers in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh,” he stated.
The five-judge Constitution bench, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant, delivered the verdict on petitions challenging the government’s move to abrogate Article 370. The court asserted that Article 370 was a temporary provision, with the proclamation of the Maharaja stating that the Constitution of India would supersede it. The verdict emphasized that Article 370 was an interim arrangement due to war conditions in the state.
The apex court also argued that not every decision taken by the Centre on behalf of a state can be legally contested, as it would lead to the administration of the state coming to a standstill. The central government’s decision in August 2019 to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate the region into two union territories was upheld by the Supreme Court, which also directed that assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir should be held by September of the following year.
