Indian Government Rebuts Washington Post Report on Apple-Government Targeting
Union Minister of State for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has rebutted a report by The Washington Post alleging that the Indian government targeted Apple after the company warned independent Indian journalists and opposition party politicians that government hackers may have tried to break into their iPhones.
Chandrasekhar called the report “half facts, fully embellished” and “tiresome” on social media.
The Washington Post story claimed that certain journalists had been targeted with spyware on their iPhones, with the latest identified case occurring in October.
The story also mentioned Apple’s response, which came on October 31, and quoted the company’s statement that it does not attribute threat notifications to specific state-sponsored attacks.
Chandrasekhar emphasized that the rest of the story includes Apple’s response and that the Ministry of Electronics & IT and his response are for Apple to explain if their devices are vulnerable and what triggered these notifications.
He also demanded that Apple join the enquiry with the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), stressing that the enquiry is ongoing.
Furthermore, Chandrasekhar stated that the story is a creative imagination and “clickbaiting at work masquerading as journalism”1.
