Shashi Tharoor Advocates Individual Choice for Ayodhya Ram Temple Consecration Attendance
Amidst the debate surrounding the non-participation of the Left in the forthcoming consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the uncertainty over other opposition leaders’ attendance, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor emphasized the autonomy of invitees to decide on their participation.
Tharoor addressed the media, stressing that labeling Opposition leaders as ‘anti-Hindu’ for not attending the Ram Temple consecration or as ‘playing into BJP hands’ if they do attend is unjust. “Let the individuals make a reasonable choice,” said the senior Congress leader, taking a dig at media narratives attempting to pigeonhole the decision-making process.
Regarding the event’s potential impact on the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Tharoor questioned the fairness of politicizing the matter. He asserted that visiting a temple is a personal decision and shouldn’t be viewed through a political lens.
Highlighting his stance on the matter, Tharoor clarified that he personally doesn’t perceive a temple as a political platform. He distinguished between visiting a temple for prayer and attending a massive political gathering led by politicians for speeches, emphasizing that these are distinct activities.
While stating that he hadn’t received a formal invitation yet, Tharoor expressed his opinion, leaving the decision to individuals. He indicated that a few members from his party have been invited, and they would decide independently regarding their attendance.
Earlier, the Ayodhya Ram Mandir Construction Committee invited Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for the ceremony, but the Congress party’s participation remains uncertain. Scheduled for January 22, the event will witness the installation of Ram Lalla’s idol at the grand temple, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the opening ceremony. Numerous dignitaries and saints from various sects are expected to attend this auspicious event, which will witness the installation of Lord Ram’s idol by Vedic priest Lakshmi Kant Dixit.
