Union Cabinet Nods for Key Infra Projects: Road Widening in Tripura, Bihar Bridge Construction, and MSP Hike for Copra
The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, greenlit crucial infrastructure initiatives encompassing road development and agricultural measures.
One of the approved projects entails the enhancement and widening of a 134.9 km two-lane road with a paved shoulder from Khowai to Harina in Tripura. With an investment of Rs 2,486.78 crore, including substantial financial assistance of Rs 1,511.70 crore from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the initiative aims to bolster road connectivity across Tripura, offering alternative access to Assam and Meghalaya apart from the existing NH-8. Moreover, the road’s proximity to the Bangladesh border is expected to improve connectivity to Bangladesh through Kailashahar, Kamalpur, and Khowai Border Check Post, potentially boosting land border trade.
The government highlighted that this development would not only enhance interstate connectivity between Assam and Tripura via NH-208A but also expedite travel time while ensuring safer connectivity for commuters.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved the construction of a new 4.56-kilometer-long, six-lane bridge over the Ganga, connecting Digha and Sonepur in Bihar. This bridge, projected to finish in 42 months at a cost of Rs 3,064.45 crore, will link North and South Bihar, providing passage for large ships and supporting inland water transport.
Moreover, the Union Cabinet consented to an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for copra for the 2023-24 marketing season. The MSP for milling copra has risen by Rs. 300 to Rs 11,160 per quintal, while the ball copra’s MSP escalated by Rs 250 to Rs 12,000 per quintal. This move, according to Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur, aims to secure better remuneration for Indian coconut growers, as outlined during a post-meeting briefing.
