Union Cabinet Sanctions Construction of 6-Lane Bridge over River Ganga in Bihar
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit the construction of a 4.56 km long, 6-lane bridge connecting Digha and Sonepur in Bihar. This significant project, with an estimated cost of Rs 3,064.45 crore, aims to enhance connectivity and expedite commute between the north and south ports of Bihar.
The proposed bridge across the River Ganga is anticipated to foster socio-economic growth in the entire region. It is projected to create direct employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers during its estimated 42-month construction period.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur emphasized the Central government’s commitment to Bihar’s development. He highlighted PM Modi’s dedication to initiating large-scale projects in the state, reiterating Bihar’s priority status within the government’s development agenda.
Designed to utilize the latest technology such as 5D-Building Information Modelling (BIM), Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS), and monthly drone mapping, the project aims to ensure superior construction quality and operational efficiency.
Presently, Digha and Sonepur are linked by a rail cum road bridge suitable only for light vehicles, hindering the transportation of goods and commodities. The new bridge intends to eliminate this constraint, enabling the movement of goods, thereby unleashing the economic potential of the region.
The bridge’s strategic location is set to establish direct connectivity from Patna to the Golden Quadrilateral Corridor, enhancing accessibility to key locations like the Buddha Stupa at Vaishali and Keshariya, along with significant religious landmarks such as the Areraj Someshwar Nath Temple and the proposed Viraat Ramayan Mandir in the East Champaran District.
With economic analysis projecting an Estimated Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) ranging from 13.1% to 17.6%, attributed to reduced travel time and distance, this infrastructure endeavor is expected to streamline vehicular movement, fostering comprehensive regional development in Bihar.
