Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir organized protests on Saturday, calling for an unbiased investigation into the deaths of three civilians allegedly detained by the Army in the Poonch area for questioning.

The deceased individuals, namely Safeer Hussain (43), Mohammad Showket (27), and Shabir Ahmad (32), were among eight individuals picked up by the Army in connection with Thursday’s attack. In response to the incident, the Jammu and Kashmir administration announced compensation and job opportunities for the families of the three civilians found dead near the site of an anti-militancy operation in the Poonch district.

Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserted that the Army had taken 15 individuals for questioning, resulting in three fatalities and others sustaining serious injuries.

“Following the Poonch incident, 15 people from Topa Peer village were picked up by the Army for questioning. Bodies of three individuals, showing signs of injury, were discovered near the encounter site, while the remaining 12 are admitted to various hospitals in critical condition,” Mehbooba stated during a press conference at the party headquarters on Saturday. The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh each for the injured until a thorough inquiry is conducted.

She also mentioned a video circulating online purportedly showing Army personnel mistreating some suspects. “I observed a video depicting Armymen assaulting people and applying red chili powder on their wounds. While it is a distressing video, I cannot vouch for its authenticity,” Mehbooba added.

Activists of the Apni Party, led by their Kashmir provincial president Ashraf Mir, staged protests at the party headquarters, expressing their dismay over the civilian deaths. The National Conference (NC) also protested the same issue, urging authorities to “halt the bloodshed of innocents.”

“NC has consistently condemned terrorism. We deplore the killing of five soldiers. However, we also denounce the killing of innocent civilians. If the government has initiated an NIA inquiry into the killing of soldiers, a similar investigation should be launched into the killing of civilians,” stated the party’s general secretary, Ali Mohammad Sagar.

Meanwhile, senior CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami called for a swift and impartial inquiry into the mysterious deaths of the three individuals. “Demanding a fair probe into the ‘mysterious’ death of three civilians near the encounter spot in Poonch. A prompt and impartial probe is crucial to ascertain the cause of their death,” Tarigami emphasized in a post.

He also unequivocally condemned the militant attack in which five soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, extending his deep condolences to their families.
