Opposition holds Protests Suspension of 143 MPs
On Thursday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar of introducing casteism into Parliament. This came in response to the Vice President criticizing a Trinamool Congress leader’s imitation of him, condemning it as an insult to his background as a farmer and Jat.
Kharge voiced these concerns as opposition Members of Parliament marched from Parliament to Vijay Chowk, protesting the suspension of 143 MPs from the House. Surrounded by MPs and leaders of the INDIA bloc parties, Kharge claimed that it was a breach of the House’s privilege that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had spoken outside Parliament during a session, failing to inform the House about the Lok Sabha security breach incident.
“We wanted to address the issue of the Parliament security breach and identify those responsible,” Kharge stated. Despite the opposition’s desire to discuss the matter, Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah did not attend, with the Prime Minister continuing to deliver speeches elsewhere, according to Kharge.
The INDIA bloc leaders plan to protest at Jantar Mantar on Friday against the suspension of MPs, and nationwide protests are scheduled in all district headquarters against the government’s perceived “immoral and illegal” behavior.
Kharge further alleged that the government deliberately obstructs the functioning of the House. Referencing the mimicry incident and Dhankhar’s comments on it, Kharge expressed regret, stating, “I am sorry to say that the Rajya Sabha Chairman has, in a way, brought casteism to Parliament by raising an issue.”
The political dispute arose on Tuesday when Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee mockingly imitated Dhankhar during the opposition’s protest on the Parliament stairs against the suspension of MPs, drawing strong condemnation from the ruling BJP. Dhankhar expressed personal hurt in the Rajya Sabha, claiming that his farmer and Jat backgrounds were targeted.
On Wednesday, two more opposition members in the Lok Sabha were suspended for displaying placards, bringing the total number of members facing such action in the lower House to 97. With these latest suspensions, the total number of members suspended from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha since December 14 has reached 143. The opposition has been disrupting House proceedings since December 13, following an incident where two individuals jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber and released smoke from canisters, demanding a statement from Home Minister Shah on the security breach.
