Pakistani-Actress Ayesha-Omar-Raises Concerns Over Women’s Safety, Advocates for Fundamental Human Rights in Podcast
Pakistani actress Ayesha Omar has voiced her apprehensions regarding the safety of women in the country, emphasizing that the fundamental human needs of freedom and safety seem to be lacking. In a podcast reported by Geo News, she expressed her desire to engage in simple activities such as walking on the road and cycling but questioned why she, as a woman, felt restricted from doing so.
Omar highlighted that the only time women felt relatively free to go outside was during the Covid-19 lockdown. She shared her feelings of stress and anxiety in Karachi, stating that she did not feel safe, and believed that many other women shared the same sentiment. According to her, the fear experienced by women in Pakistan is incomprehensible to men, and the constant anxiety faced by women is hard to grasp.
Drawing a comparison, Omar mentioned that she felt much safer in Lahore than in Karachi during her college days when she used to commute by bus. However, recounting her experiences in Karachi, she revealed that she had been mugged twice. She lamented the lack of freedom for women in Pakistan, expressing concern about the risks of kidnapping, rape, and mugging, which deterred her from walking freely.
Emphasizing the absence of basic human needs like freedom and safety, Omar stressed that even homes in Pakistan did not guarantee safety. While acknowledging that crime exists in every country, she lamented the inability to walk freely in a park in Pakistan without facing harassment.Despite her concerns, Omar professed her love for Pakistan, recognizing it as the place that has given her everything.
She acknowledged that if given the choice to live anywhere in the world, she would choose Pakistan. However, she revealed that her brother had moved abroad to Denmark, and her mother also had plans to leave the country, as reported by Geo News.
