deRivaz & Ives Auction House recently concluded its Raj Kapoor @100 online Auction, setting new world records for vintage Indian film memorabilia. The success of this event follows their previous triumphs with online auctions featuring Satyajit Ray, Bachchanalia & Feminine Icons. The auction showcased the enduring cinematic legacy of Raj Kapoor, resonating strongly with enthusiasts worldwide.

Several lots in the auction witnessed frenzied bidding, with some key pieces attracting 30 to 40 bids. Notably, the first release half-sheet poster of the 1950 film “Banwra,” starring Raj & Nimmi and directed by G. Rakesh (lot 7), exceeded expectations. This rare poster, boasting artwork by Junior Guild Photo Arts and printed by Universal Photo Litho Studio, fetched an impressive Rs582,400 ($7,015 / £5,825) against its estimated range of Rs60,000 – Rs90,000 ($725 – $1,085 / £600 – £900). Garnering 48 bids, this hand-painted early first release poster showcased exceptional aesthetic quality, becoming increasingly rare and sought-after.

Another highlight was the rare Ukrainian release poster for Raj Kapoor’s iconic 1970 film, “Mera Naam Joker.” Esteemed for its unique graphic design, the full-sheet poster fetched a record-breaking bid of Rs156,800 ($1,890 / £1,570), surpassing its estimated range of Rs40,000 – Rs60,000 ($480 – $725 / £400 – £600). Its vibrant representation and the cultural significance of Raj Kapoor in the earlier USSR Soviet regions and Eastern Europe made it highly coveted among collectors.

Lot 8 featured an autographed portrait photograph of Raj Kapoor, dated 21.9.1950, which attracted a winning bid of Rs31,360 ($380 / £315), surpassing its highest estimate.

Films like the classic “Bobby” (1973) continue to evoke nostalgia and appeal to collectors even fifty years after their release. Showcards from the film achieved a winning bid of Rs106,400 ($1,280 / £1,065), emphasizing the enduring emotional connection across generations.
