Sultan of Oman to Embark on a Landmark Three-Day State Visit to India
The Sultanate of Oman’s Head of State, Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, is poised to commence a significant three-day state visit to India starting tomorrow, accompanied by a prominent delegation of senior ministers and officials. This visit, scheduled to strengthen historical, cultural, and economic ties, holds great significance for both nations.
India and Oman share an enduring friendship rooted in a rich tapestry of historical connections and deep-seated cultural bonds that span over 5,000 years. Their diplomatic relations, inaugurated in 1955, evolved into a strategic partnership in 2008. Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s visit to India marks a pivotal moment in further fortifying this enduring relationship.
The Sultan, upon his arrival in the national capital, will be welcomed by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Subsequently, President Droupadi Murmu, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will extend a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on December 16. During the visit, the Sultan will engage in various significant activities, including a visit to the National Gallery of Modern Art and a meeting with PM Modi at Hyderabad House, where the PM will also host a luncheon in his honor.
This visit presents an opportune moment for both countries to explore collaborative avenues that aim to enhance regional stability, promote progress, and foster prosperity, as highlighted in a release by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The visit holds special importance, given the regular high-level engagements between the leadership of India and Oman. Over the years, these engagements have substantially strengthened bilateral relations. Moreover, Oman’s significant Indian expatriate community, exceeding 700,000 individuals in the post-pandemic era, has played a vital role in Oman’s economic development and cultural diversity.
Defense cooperation stands as a key pillar in the strategic partnership between India and Oman. Notably, Oman is the sole country in West Asia engaging in regular bilateral exercises and service-level staff talks with all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces.
As a testament to Oman’s strong relationship with India, the country received a special invitation to participate as a guest nation in the G20 Summit under India’s G20 Presidency. Oman’s active participation across various G20 meetings and ministerial gatherings signifies the depth of collaboration between the two nations on the global stage.
