Calls for Comprehensive Policy to Address the Issue
The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Congress has expressed concerns about the resurgence of militancy in the valley and called upon the government to take concrete steps by formulating a comprehensive policy to combat it. Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President Vikar Rasool Wani strongly condemned the recent killing of three security force officers during a gunfight with militants in the Kokernag area, highlighting the urgent need for addressing the escalating situation.
Tragic Loss of Security Personnel
Major Ashish Dhonchak, 19 Rashtriya Rifles Commanding Officer Col Manpreet Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police Humayun Bhat, and a soldier lost their lives during the encounter with militants, which extended into its fourth day on Saturday.
Wani expressed his condemnation unequivocally, stating, “It is a very sad incident. The situation is that militancy has not ended as the Government of India or the LG administration claims. I think they should frame a comprehensive policy to curb the militancy so that people come out of a life of distress which they have been living for the last 35 years.”
Non-political Approach and Concern for Kashmir
Wani affirmed that the Congress party would not politicize the issue and emphasized their sorrow over the loss of lives. He further pointed out that recent incidents in Rajouri and Uri suggest that militancy is resurging in the region, warranting immediate and concrete measures from the government.
Wani also noted the disparity between the ground situation in the valley and the way the BJP portrays it to the rest of the country for political purposes. He criticized the use of militancy as a political tool and stated that Congress and like-minded parties prioritize national interest and refrain from exploiting such issues or martyrs for political gains.
Upcoming Protest Program
The Congress leader announced a protest program against what they perceive as “anti-people measures” of the government. From September 19 to 28, daily protests will be organized by the party in two districts, one in Kashmir and one in Jammu province. Among the issues to be addressed are an alleged scam in the Jal Shakti department, the installation of pre-paid smart meters, forceful recovery of electric tariffs, removal of additional duties on American products, and the imposition of property, water, and toll taxes.
Wani also called for a CBI inquiry into the Jal Shakti department matter and expressed concern about the impact of removing additional duties on American products, which could negatively affect the apple industry in Jammu and Kashmir.
