The operation to root out terrorists hiding in the Gadole forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district has entered its fifth day. Security forces have expanded their area of operation to neighboring villages and have been using mortar shells to target the forest area where the terrorists have been holed up since Wednesday. This operation was initiated after an initial exchange of fire that resulted in the killing of two Army officers and a deputy superintendent of police.
Drones and helicopters are being deployed for surveillance in the dense forest region, helping pinpoint the locations of cave-like hideouts where the terrorists are believed to be hiding. Drone footage has shown terrorists attempting to escape after one such hideout was hit by shells fired by security forces.
To prevent terrorists from escaping into civilian areas, the security cordon has been extended to the neighboring Posh Kreeri area as a precautionary measure.
The Northern Army commander visited the site of the encounter to assess the operational situation and was briefed on the high-intensity operations, the use of hi-tech equipment for surveillance, and precision firepower employed by the forces. He also inspected the drones used in the operation and interacted with the troops involved.
According to the police, two to three terrorists are trapped in the forest area, and the security forces are maintaining a tight cordon with the aim of neutralizing them. The operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs.
The terrorists had killed Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish Dhonchak, Deputy Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police Humayun Bhat, and a soldier during the initial exchange of fire.
The security forces are determined to eliminate the terrorists and restore peace to the region.
