For the past three days, unrelenting rain has been causing significant problems for local residents, schoolchildren, and commuters due to road closures caused by debris accumulation along the Samba-Mansar road. The continuous downpour has led to difficulties for schoolchildren, local residents, office-goers, and even truck drivers en route to Kashmir and Pathankot.

Road Closure Challenges

In the early hours of a Friday morning, heavy rain led to a road closure that lasted for approximately two and a half hours. The accumulation of debris from a drain near the village of Daboh resulted in the road becoming extremely muddy and treacherous, trapping numerous vehicles. The closure of the road has created hardships for schoolchildren, and the ensuing traffic jam has caused long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road.

Traffic Police Intervention

The traffic situation worsened before the intervention of the Traffic Police, who worked to alleviate the congestion. This recurring problem has persisted for the past three days, with the road being closed daily during rain showers, resuming normal traffic flow only when the rain subsides.

Resentment Toward Roads and Buildings Department

The Samba-Mansar road falls under the jurisdiction of the Roads and Buildings Department, which has faced criticism from local residents. They allege that the Department fails to promptly clear debris from the road, leading to these recurrent issues. Locals have reported similar problems during every rainy season, with several road sections becoming impassable due to debris accumulation. Despite notifying Department officials about these concerns, no effective action has been taken, according to residents.

Official Response

Vijay Kumar Attri, Executive Engineer of Roads and Buildings in Samba, acknowledged the challenges posed by numerous drains along the road, particularly the one near Daboh village. During the rainy season, these drains often become inundated, carrying debris onto the road, which subsequently leads to blockages. The Department does make efforts to clear the debris, but the problem recurs frequently due to the heavy monsoon rains.

The continuous rain and its impact on road conditions highlight the need for effective drainage systems and proactive measures by the Roads and Buildings Department to mitigate the disruption faced by the local community and commuters.
