    The Geographical Indications Registry has granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to saffron grown and harvested in the high-altitude areas of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir.

    Dr Devansh Yadav, the Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar, announced the news on social media platform X. He wrote: “For the first time, Kishtwar Saffron brand gets GI tagged… Along with Kashmiri saffron, multiple FPO brands are emerging now!! The cherry on top – it is certified as grade1.” The post says.

    The spice, which is also known as Kumkum, is cultivated in some parts of Jammu’s Kishtwar region as well as Kashmir. It is the most costly saffron crop and a major source of income for the farmers in Kishtwar, a remote mountainous district of Jammu. The local name for the saffron production area in Kishtwar is Mandal.
