PSAJK Appeals for Winter Vacations Amid Challenging Weather
As sub-zero temperatures and dense fog grip the region, the Private Schools Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) is urging the government to prioritize the declaration of winter vacations, particularly for lower classes. The Association, in response to numerous representations from concerned parents and schools, highlights the difficult weather conditions that pose challenges for students, especially in the lower grades.
A spokesperson for PSAJK underscores the struggle faced by young children in waking up early and preparing for school in the harsh winter conditions. Unlike developed nations with centralized heating, the region lacks such infrastructure, compelling everyone to adapt to the weather’s demands. The spokesperson notes, “Even for parents, it is a difficult task to prepare their wards for schools.
Health Concerns and Academic Focus at Stake
Expressing grave concerns about the adverse effects of extreme foggy conditions and sub-zero temperatures on children’s health, the Association emphasizes how these conditions disrupt students’ focus in schools, rendering the entire class exercise ineffective. The spokesperson pleads for the government’s intervention to safeguard the well-being of the children, calling for the announcement of winter vacations at the earliest.

Realigning Academic Calendar with Local Temperatures
PSAJK reiterates its longstanding demand to realign the academic calendar with the local climate. The spokesperson argues that the March session is impractical for Kashmir, where schools typically complete their syllabus up to November. The harsh winters make the months leading up to March unproductive for students who are unsure whether to revise old lessons or delve into the syllabus of new classes.
Insisting that government orders cannot alter weather conditions, the Association advocates for a return to the old academic calendar, citing the problems created by the March session. “The March session has created numerous problems, and it needs to be dealt with before more damage is done,” emphasizes the spokesperson.
They suggest adopting the October session, a norm in many countries with severe winters, as a practical solution.
