Qatar PM Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani to Visit Tehran as Iran-Oman Talks Continue Over Strait of Hormuz

Qatar PM Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani to Visit Tehran as Iran-Oman Talks Continue Over Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, AUGUST 27 [VoM News]: Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani will visit Tehran on Thursday as diplomatic efforts continue to ease tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said Sheikh Mohammed will discuss mediation efforts, freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway and the need to restore conditions that existed before February 28. The talks will also focus on reducing tensions and creating conditions for renewed dialogue.

The Strait of Hormuz has remained a major point of contention since the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Iran has sought greater control over shipping through the waterway, including proposals involving charges on vessels, while Washington has opposed such measures.

Iran and Oman have also been negotiating arrangements for managing traffic and revenues linked to the strait. A senior Iranian source told Reuters that no final agreement with Oman had been reached and that discussions were continuing.

The comments appeared to differ from those of Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi, a spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who said the two countries had reached mutually acceptable results.

Mohebbi said the strait would remain closed unless Washington met Tehran’s conditions under an interim ceasefire agreement, including lifting the blockade on Iranian ports, providing compensation and removing sanctions.

Iran and Oman have held talks for weeks as both Tehran and Washington seek influence over shipping through the crucial waterway.
