JKPCC Chief Tariq Hameed Karra Meets GDC Thathri Hunger Strikers, Assures Support
DODA, INDIA, AUGUST 27 [VoM News]: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President and Central Shalteng MLA Tariq Hameed Karra arrived in Thathri in the Doda district on Monday to support youth conducting a round-the-clock hunger protest against the delay in constructing a permanent building for Government Degree College (GDC) Thathri.
This marked the seventh consecutive day of the hunger protest by local youth and members of civil society for execution of the project, which was sanctioned in 2010 but is still housed in a temporary Rural Development Department building with only few rooms and academic streams.
Karra met with the hunger strikers, where he expressed sorrow and lamented that young boys and local people had to embark on a round-the-clock strike demanding development of basic infrastructure for the institution.
The Congress leader condemned the so called administrative negligence in the matter which he termed a proof of “autocratic approach” of the concerned authorities against the needs of the student community of the area, and added educational institutions must be strengthening and extended instead of becoming a political football.
“Education is the basic public need and must not be prolonged”, stated Karra in addition to ensuring all sort of cooperation to the hunger strikers.
The J&K PCC chief urged the hunger strikers organisers to share relevant documents and assured to raise the matter at the administrative and legislative levels for an early execution of the much-needed permanent academic facility.
The youths have been demanding swift construction of the permanent campus building for the long-awaited GDC Thathri.
