Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Visit Manipur in October, Lay Foundation Stone for Senapati Medical College

IMPHAL, AUGUST 27 [VoM News]: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to visit Manipur in the first week of October to lay the foundation stone for a medical college in Senapati and review development projects, according to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.

The proposed visit was discussed during Shah’s meeting with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in Delhi on Wednesday. Shah reportedly assured that the Centre would fulfil the aspirations of the people of Manipur.

The visit comes amid renewed demands for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census and delimitation exercises. The state Cabinet has recently approved the establishment of Senapati Medical College in the predominantly Naga-inhabited district.

Shah last visited Manipur in April 2024 for an election rally in Imphal. He had earlier undertaken a four-day visit in May-June 2023, shortly after ethnic violence erupted in the state.

More than 260 people have been killed and thousands displaced since the violence began in May 2023. President’s Rule was imposed in February 2025 following continued clashes and the resignation of then-Chief Minister N Biren Singh. It was lifted in February 2026, with Yumnam Khemchand Singh taking charge.

Meanwhile, Manipur legislators and a delegation of 14 civil society organisations are in Delhi seeking the Centre’s intervention on the NRC-before-Census demand.

The Chief Minister’s Secretariat said Shah also praised the restoration of bus services and movement along NH-2.
