The unfortunate incident occurred as around 40 workers were deployed for reprofiling, a process involving the modification or adjustment of the tunnel’s structure, located roughly 265 meters inside. The collapse, which took place nearly 50 to 55 meters away from the workers, resulted in their entrapment, triggering an immediate response to initiate rescue operations.

Innovative Approaches and Challenges Faced

Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to ensure the trapped workers’ well-being, prioritizing the supply of essentials such as food and oxygen. Communication has been established through Walkie-Talkies, allowing for coordination in the challenging rescue environment. The delay in operations has been attributed to loose soil causing debris to fall, prompting stabilization efforts and the initiation of shotcreting to secure the unstable portions of the tunnel.

The complex rescue plan involves the removal of loose dirt and shotcreting over a 21-meter stretch of debris. Meanwhile, a contingency plan using a hydraulic jack to push a 900 mm diameter pipe through the debris heap is underway, with specialized equipment and personnel being mobilized for this daring operation.
