Zoram People’s Movement Leads in Mizoram Assembly Elections

As the vote counting for the Mizoram assembly elections progressed on Monday morning, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) emerged as the frontrunner, according to the Election Commission (EC). Early trends indicated that the ZPM was leading in 25 seats and had already secured a win in one, surpassing the halfway mark in the 40-seat assembly. The majority mark for Mizoram’s assembly is set at 21 seats. Meanwhile, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) was leading in 10 seats, with the BJP and Congress leading in three and one seat respectively.

Key Political Figures Face Tough Battles

In a significant development, Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia was defeated by ZPM’s candidate W Chhuanawma in the Tuichang seat by a margin of 909 votes. Chief Minister Zoramthanga faced a tough challenge in the Aizawl East-1 seat, trailing behind ZPM’s Lalthansanga after two rounds of counting. In the South Tuipui seat, Health Minister R Lalthangliana was trailing, with ZPM’s Jeje Lalpekhlua taking the lead. Lalduhoma, the Chief Ministerial candidate for ZPM, was leading in the Serchhip seat. The counting process was conducted in 13 centers across the state.

Counting Process and Voter Turnout

The counting commenced with postal ballots, followed by votes from Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) starting 8:30 am. The number of counting rounds varied across constituencies, with some having only two rounds due to a lesser number of voters, while most constituencies underwent five rounds of counting. Over 4,000 personnel were involved in the counting process, spread across 399 tables for EVMs and 56 for postal ballots. The elections, which took place on November 7, saw an impressive voter turnout of over 80% from the state’s 8.57 lakh electorate. A total of 174 candidates, including 18 women, contested the elections.

Party Participation in the Elections

In these elections, the MNF, ZPM, and Congress each contested all 40 seats. The BJP fielded candidates in 23 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) marked its first assembly election appearance in Mizoram, contesting in four seats. Additionally, there were 17 Independent candidates in the fray.
