OpenAI Drops GPT-5.6 Sol API Prices By More Than 20% As AI Competition Hots Up

SAN FRANCISCO, AUG. 22, 2026 (VoM News) OpenAI said that it will cut the API prices for its GPT-5.6 Sol model by more than 20% for three months amid intense rivalry from AI start-ups such as Anthropic, and Chinese AI developers, according to a statement released by the company Friday.

The price cuts for eligible developer programs, and its coding language Codex will also be reflected in credit use for its agentic-AI based language model ChatGPT Work. The cost for the subscription-based offerings including Pro, Plus, and ChatGPT Business will be kept the same.

As per OpenAI’s API price list, for standard short-context length tasks the prices for GPT-5.6 Sol have been decreased from $5 per 1 million input tokens to $4, and $30 per 1 million output tokens to $20.

In a bid to outperform its AI competitors, Reuters also reported in their article that in this fierce pricing and performance-driven artificial intelligence competition that while Anthropic lists Claude Fable 5’s costs at $10/1M input tokens and $50/1M output tokens, there exists another pricing such as Claude Opus 5: the token prices per one million at $5 input and $25/1M output tokens.

Similarly, OpenAI cut the prices for smaller versions including the GPT-5.6 Terra mid-tier version by 20% and the affordable model, Luna, has been lowered in price by up to 80%.

According to the pricing sheet released, this measure is expected to boost usage of this most advanced model due to lower costs among AI developers utilizing their API.
