Xiaomi Redmi 12 5G: An Affordable 5G Experience with Compromises
Affordable Price, Variants, and Design: Xiaomi continues to expand its portfolio with the launch of the Redmi 12 5G, targeting the budget segment with an attractive starting price of Rs. 11,999. This new entrant follows the 4G variant, offering the promise of 5G connectivity without breaking the bank.
The phone is available in three different configurations, ensuring that there is a model for varying storage and performance needs. The top-tier variant boasts 8GB of RAM and a substantial 256GB of storage, coming in at Rs. 15,499.
Design-wise, the Redmi 12 5G doesn’t disappoint for its price bracket, featuring a glass back and a polycarbonate frame, along with a modern USB Type-C port and a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack. Aesthetic touches such as chrome rings around the camera add a premium feel, although the device is prone to smudges and fingerprints.
Display and Camera Proficiency: The device is equipped with a sizable 6.79-inch Full-HD+ LCD screen, with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate that suffices for everyday scrolling and UI navigation. While the indoor viewing experience is solid, the absence of an AMOLED panel is felt, particularly in outdoor settings where legibility takes a hit.
In the camera department, the Redmi 12 5G’s dual setup, headlined by a 50-megapixel primary sensor, captures respectable photos in ample lighting. However, low-light performance dips, and the lack of an ultra-wide lens might limit photographic versatility. Selfie enthusiasts can make do with the 8-megapixel front shooter, which performs well under good lighting conditions.
Battery Life and Performance Prowess: The battery performance stands out with a 5,000mAh capacity, ensuring that the phone can handle a full day’s worth of tasks with ease. However, patience is required with the 18W charging speed, which lags behind the faster options available in the market.
Performance-wise, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset delivers in day-to-day tasks but falls short for intense gaming. MIUI 14, based on Android 13, offers a relatively smooth experience, although it comes with some bloatware. In summary, the Redmi 12 5G is a commendable budget-friendly option for those prioritizing battery life and 5G, but for consumers who value a superior display and camera, the slightly pricier Redmi Note 12 5G might be a better fit.
