United Nations Warns Strong El Nino Likely Between July and September, Raising Extreme Weather Risk
GENEVA, June 26 [VoM News]: : The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said there is a high chance that El Nino will develop quickly to a strong event in July to September, potentially triggering more extreme weather across the globe.
An analysis of the latest Global Seasonal Climate Update produced by the WMO said warming sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific clearly indicate the probability of a strong El Nino.
“Based on climate models, anomalies for sea surface temperatures are predicted to be more than 2 C in regions monitored”, the report states.
Climate scientists say they are confident of the outcome.
“There is an increased likelihood of increased incidence of extreme weather in different regions associated with this strong El Nino event including extreme dryness, increased risk of heavy precipitation, heat waves and marine heat waves,” the agency stated.

Above average temperatures are likely across the most populated land regions from July to September. Below average rainfall is expected over the Indian sub-continent and large parts of Australia, whereas unusually wet conditions may prevail across parts of south-western USA.
“The development of El Nino signals the development of extreme weather events.
Early warning and seasonal forecasts are extremely important in building the capacity of governments to respond, especially in agriculture and health systems,” WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.
The agency said while climate change does not seem to affect the frequency of the El Nino events, its effects may be amplified due to the higher temperature of the atmosphere and ocean.
