West Bengal Governor Calls Emergency Meeting Amid Kolkata Hospital Rape Case

In response to a letter from former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has taken significant steps regarding the rape and murder case at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Harbhajan Singh’s letter, addressed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor Bose, called for immediate and decisive action in the wake of the horrific incident.
On Sunday, Governor Bose announced that he has convened an emergency meeting with a cross-section of Bengal society to discuss the actions taken and to gather public opinions on the matter.
Taking to social media platform X, Governor Bose acknowledged Harbhajan Singh’s concern and assured that swift actions are being taken.
Governor Bose also emphasized that he would personally inform Harbhajan Singh of the steps taken and expressed solidarity with the civil society across India, who have voiced their deep concern over the tragedy and the perceived inaction by the authorities.
He stressed the importance of public safety and the need for severe punishment for the perpetrators.
Earlier in the day, Harbhajan Singh took to X to express his deep anguish over the delay in justice for the victim. He urged the state authorities to act swiftly and decisively, highlighting the non-negotiable nature of women’s safety and dignity.
Singh stressed that exemplary punishment for the culprits is essential to restore faith in the system and to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The incident, which occurred on August 9, involved the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The case has sparked nationwide protests and strikes by the medical community.
Following vandalism at the hospital campus on August 14, Kolkata police have enforced Section 163 of the BNSS around the hospital to maintain order.
