UWW President’s Reminder on Athlete Registration

United World Wrestling (UWW) president Nenad Lalovic recently communicated a crucial message to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) regarding athlete registration. Lalovic emphasized that only the federation has the authority to handle athlete registration, even as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)-appointed ad-hoc panel was set to conduct trials.

UWW President’s Reminder:Trials Announcement and Venue Details

The Ad-hoc Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) announced the trial dates for the selection of Indian wrestlers for the upcoming Asian Championships and Olympic Games qualifiers. Scheduled for March 10 and 11, the trials for men’s Freestyle and Greco-Roman categories will be held at the Sports Authority of India, Sonipat, while women’s trials will take place at NIS Patiala.

UWW President’s Reminder:Key Dates for Championships and Qualifiers

The Asian Wrestling Championships are scheduled from April 11 to 16, followed by the Asian Olympic Qualifiers from April 19 to 21. These competitions play a pivotal role in determining the Indian wrestling contingent for international events.

UWW President’s Reminder:UWW’s Position on Federation’s Status and Responsibilities

In a letter directed to WFI’s suspended president Sanjay Singh, UWW Chief Lalovic highlighted the federation’s status after the lifting of suspension. Lalovic stressed that UWW considers WFI as any other affiliated federation, subject to UWW regulations. He underlined the responsibility of national federations to select and announce their teams for various competitions, emphasizing that registration must be done exclusively through the UWW’s competition administration system.

The letter concluded with a reminder that UWW-affiliated national federations are the only entities authorized to handle athlete registrations, reiterating the importance of adhering to UWW rules and regulations.

This communication follows UWW’s lifting of the suspension on the Wrestling Federation of India in February, signaling a renewed phase for Indian wrestling. The UWW had imposed provisional suspension on WFI in August the previous year due to a failure in holding elections promptly.

India’s wrestling landscape has experienced significant changes post WFI elections, including the suspension by the Sports Ministry and subsequent appointment of an ad-hoc committee by the Indian Olympic Association. The developments also led to emotional farewells from notable wrestlers such as Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat, who returned their government honors.
