Union IT Minister Addresses Opposition Claims of Apple Warnings
In response to claims by opposition leaders that they have received warning messages from Apple about potential state-sponsored attackers targeting their devices, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw spoke out on Tuesday. He expressed the view that those who cannot see the country’s growth are engaging in destructive politics. Vaishnaw, who serves as the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, clarified that such advisories have been dispatched to individuals in 150 countries.
Apple’s Warning: A Matter of Estimation
The Union Minister highlighted that the warnings issued by Apple lacked clear information and were based on estimates, characterizing them as vague. He pointed out that Apple itself has released a clarification stating that the allegations made by compulsive critics are unfounded. This isn’t an isolated case; similar advisories have been sent to individuals in 150 countries.
Vaishnaw asserted that the individuals spreading these falsehoods are engaging in destructive politics and suggested that when compulsive critics lack substantial issues, they resort to raising concerns about surveillance.
Opposition Leaders’ Concerns
Earlier in the day, several opposition leaders from various political parties, including Shashi Tharoor, Raghav Chadha, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Asaduddin Owaisi, and others, alleged that their Apple devices had been the target of hacking attempts. They shared screenshots of the warning messages received on their Apple devices.
Amidst these claims, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the Modi government for the “Apple warning message” and accused it of trying to divert attention from real issues. He also raised concerns about business deals associated with the Adani group, suggesting a direct link to the BJP’s financial system.
Rahul Gandhi addressed the hacking allegations involving opposition MPs, stating that several people in his office had received the warning message. He expressed his lack of fear, even in the face of potential surveillance, and vowed to cooperate if his phone were to be taken for examination.
Apple’s Position
Apple, a multinational corporation, clarified that it does not attribute the threat notifications to any specific state-sponsored attacker. The company emphasized the challenges of detecting such attacks and the imperfections of threat intelligence signals, which could result in false alarms. Apple’s priority is the security of its users and preventing state-sponsored attackers from adapting their behavior to evade detection in the future.
