UN Judges to Rule on South Africa’s Urgent Measures Against Israel at ICJ
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to rule on South Africa’s request for emergency measures against Israel, accusing it of state-led genocide in Gaza.
Focus on Urgent Intervention, Not Core Accusation
Friday’s ruling will not address the core accusation but will specifically focus on the urgent intervention sought by South Africa. This includes the immediate halt to Israel’s military operation, which South Africa claims has resulted in significant casualties.
Israel’s Rejection and Justification
Israel has vehemently rejected the case, with a government spokesperson anticipating the U.N.’s top court to dismiss what they consider “spurious and specious charges.” Israel contends that its military actions in Gaza are within the bounds of international law and are in defense of its right to self-preservation.
ICJ’s Role and Potential Measures
The 17-judge panel will decide on whether to impose provisional measures and assess the plausible risk of Israel’s operation violating the 1948 Genocide Convention. The ruling, expected at 1 p.m. (1200 GMT), will determine the necessity of emergency measures. South Africa has proposed nine such measures, acting as a restraining order during the full case proceedings, which might extend over several years.
