U.S. Allocates $21 Million in Additional Aid to Gaza Amid Renewed Israel-Hamas Tensions
Amid recent escalations in hostilities between Israel and Hamas, the United States, following a brief pause for hostage release efforts, has announced an extra $21 million in aid to Gaza, as reported by CNN citing U.S. Aid Administrator Samantha Power during her trip to Egypt. The aid package encompasses crucial support for hygiene and shelter supplies, food, market-based assistance benefiting over 120,000 people, as well as psychosocial care and health services for Gaza’s overwhelmed health system. CNN notes that this aid will specifically strengthen an NGO-operated field hospital providing in-patient care in Gaza.
This announcement from the U.S. Aid Administrator comes on the heels of President Joe Biden’s declaration of $100 million in humanitarian aid to Gaza on October 18. Samantha Power visited El-Arish, Egypt, engaging with local officials and international humanitarian organizations. During her visit, the U.S. Department of Defense facilitated the airlift of 36,000 pounds of food assistance and medical supplies from Amman, Jordan, to El-Arish upon USAID’s request.
Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder disclosed that an additional 36,000 pounds of critical supplies were airlifted to Gaza, emphasizing the provision of vital medical supplies, warm clothing, and food and nutrition. These supplies, delivered via a U.S. Air Force C-17 to Egypt, are set to be transported to Gaza by ground and distributed through UN agencies. Further flights are anticipated in the coming days to address ongoing humanitarian needs in the region.
