Two Notorious Drug Peddlers arrested in Doda jk,under Public Safety Act: Stringent Measures Against Illicit Trafficking
On Sunday, two individuals identified as notorious drug peddlers were apprehended in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district under the provisions of the Public Safety Act (PSA), according to the police.
The detainees were identified as Surinder Kumar from Chakrabhati and Mohd Sohail, also known as “Ganja,” from Bhaderwah. Both have been charged under the PSA for their active involvement in illicit drug trafficking. They have been confined to Bhaderwah district jail in accordance with the directive issued by the Jammu Divisional Commissioner, as confirmed by a police spokesperson.
The police spokesperson revealed that the duo, considered ‘wanted,’ had multiple cases registered against them across various police stations in the Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban range. Surinder Kumar faced charges in three cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, lodged at police stations in Batote, Doda, and Banihal, spanning from 2021 to 2023. Mohd Sohail, alias “Ganja,” was sought in connection with two cases registered under the NDPS Act at the Bhaderwah police station in the previous year.
Highlighting the significance of their detention, the officer emphasized that both individuals, being habitual offenders, posed a serious threat to the local youth. The imposition of the PSA against them is anticipated to serve as a deterrent to other criminals and drug smugglers who remain at large, he added.
In an assertive stance against drug peddling, the police have taken stringent measures, registering 24 First Information Reports (FIRs) under the NDPS Act against 30 offenders in Doda district. Additionally, five notorious drug smugglers have been detained under the PSA during the 2023-24 period, the officer informed.
