Twinkle Khanna Reveals Extreme Measures Taken During ‘Badshah’ Song Shoot and Candidly Discusses Starvation and Body Image Pressures in Bollywood
Former actress Twinkle Khanna recently opened up about the challenges she faced while filming the song “Mohabbat Ho Gayee” for Shah Rukh Khan’s movie “Badshah.” In a conversation with Shrayana Bhattacharya, Twinkle revealed that she resorted to extreme measures, including starving herself, to achieve a desired look for the song.
Reflecting on the pressure to maintain a flat stomach for the catsuits she wore in the film, Twinkle admitted, “I know you see all these actresses saying that they don’t diet and they eat everything; it’s not true, most of them are starving.” She humorously described her self-imposed diet, stating, “This was my own brainwave that I’m going to live on channa. For some reason, being Gujarati, I felt that was also cheap, and you know, I could get it easily wherever I went. So, this was my diet.”
Recalling the specific scene where Shah Rukh Khan had to lift her, Twinkle shared her anxiety, saying, “In this song, he had to lift me up, and I was so scared that I would explode like the gas canisters in the Parliament, but I didn’t. So if you see my teeth clenching there, other things are also clenching and just holding on, but yes, I survived that bit as well.”
Twinkle also addressed the reception of her performance in the film, mentioning a review that focused solely on her navel. Surprisingly, she noted, “At that time, nobody protested; this was perfectly fine. We didn’t think it was misogynistic. In fact, I think I thanked the writer.”
“Badshah,” directed by Mustan Burmawalla and Abbas Burmawalla, was a hit film that featured Shah Rukh Khan, Twinkle Khanna, Rakhee Gulzar, Johnny Lever, and Amrish Puri in pivotal roles.
After bidding farewell to her acting career, Twinkle transitioned into an author. She recently launched her fourth book, “Welcome to Paradise,” sharing on Instagram, “Welcome to Paradise, my 4th book, is a collection of stories that explore the depths of heartbreak, relationships, and deception. Some of these characters have lived inside my head for the last five years, and now they are ready to meet all of you.”
