Trump ahead of Biden in swing states amid legal and economic woes
Former President Donald Trump is leading President Joe Biden in key swing states for the 2024 presidential elections, according to recent polls. Trump, however, faces several legal challenges that could jeopardize his candidacy, as he is accused of inciting an insurrection against the US government in 2021.
Biden, who seeks a second term, is struggling to win over voters amid high inflation and low approval ratings. His handling of the Covid pandemic, the conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, and the immigration crisis at the southern border have been widely criticized by the public. His support among women and Arab Americans has dropped significantly, as they feel the economic and social impact of his policies.
The US economy has shown signs of recovery, with lower inflation and unemployment rates, but the perception of the economy remains negative among most voters. A survey by the New York Times and Sienna College found that 81 per cent of registered voters rated the economy as “Fair” or “Poor”.
Biden’s foreign policy has also been divisive, as he faces pressure from both allies and adversaries. His support for Ukraine against Russia’s aggression has been questioned by some Americans, who think the US is doing too much to help Kyiv. His backing of Israel’s defence against Hamas has been condemned by many Arab Americans, who disapprove of his response to the conflict. Some voters even think that Trump could do a better job in these situations.
With less than a year to go before the elections, Biden and Trump are locked in a tight race, with both facing significant challenges and opportunities. The outcome will depend on how they address the issues that matter to the American people.
