Trinamool Congress Suspends Sheikh Shahjahan Amid ED Case
In response to the arrest of Sandeshkhali strongman Sheikh Shahjahan in connection with the mob attack on an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team, Trinamool Congress has suspended him from the party for six years. The party leaders held a press conference to announce the decision, criticizing the BJP and challenging it to take action against tainted leaders within its ranks.
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien emphasized the party’s commitment to standing by the people and taking swift action against those alleged to have harmed them. He stated that the party “walks the talk” when it comes to issues that hurt the public.
Bengal minister Bratya Basu questioned the BJP’s failure to take action against leaders like Himanta Biswa Sarma despite multiple allegations against them. He highlighted the difference in approach, stating that the BJP is not quick to suspend a leader upon arrest, unlike Trinamool Congress. Basu mentioned that the BJP is often referred to as a “washing machine,” indicating a tendency to handle such situations differently.
The Trinamool leader revealed that the ED had sought a stay from the Calcutta High Court to prevent Bengal police from arresting Sheikh Shahjahan, creating suspicions of an attempt to keep the Sandeshkhali issue alive until Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bengal trip. He credited Trinamool Congress for setting an example by proceeding with the arrest after the court’s clarification.
Trinamool MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar questioned the delay in the ED arresting Shahjahan, and Abhishek Banerjee had earlier claimed that the high court had hindered the police’s actions. The court later clarified that the state police were free to arrest Shahjahan.
Sheikh Shahjahan faces serious allegations from residents of the island in North 24 Parganas, including land grab, extortion, and charges of sexual harassment. His arrest came after 55 days of being on the run, with accusations that the Trinamool was shielding him. The swift action by the party to suspend him reflects its commitment to addressing public concerns and maintaining transparency.
