Tragedy Strikes Mali: Over 70 Killed in Gold Mine Tunnel Collapse
In a devastating incident at a Malian gold mining site last week, a tunnel collapse claimed the lives of more than 70 people. This tragedy underscores the challenges faced by the region, which is prone to mining accidents. Mali, despite being one of Africa’s leading gold producers, grapples with deadly landslides at gold mining sites, particularly in artisanal mining operations.
Witnesses Describe Terrifying Scene
Oumar Sidibe, an official for gold miners in the southwestern town of Kangaba, described the horror as the earth shook and a noise marked the beginning of the incident on Friday. The search for survivors concluded with the discovery of 73 bodies among the over 200 gold miners at the site. The perilous conditions in these mining areas contribute to such tragic events.
Mali’s Gold Mining Sector and Safety Concerns
Mali’s mining sector, dominated by foreign entities like Canada’s Barrick Gold and Australia’s Resolute Mining, also witnesses significant artisanal mining activities. Artisanal mines attract thousands of gold miners, but they operate in precarious conditions. The lack of safety measures, infrastructure, and remote locations contribute to the challenges faced by miners, leading to frequent accidents.
