Toyota Halts Shipments of 10 Models Amid Testing Irregularities Scandal
Toyota announced on Monday the suspension of shipments for 10 models due to testing irregularities at affiliate company Toyota Industries. The irregularities involved improper horsepower output testing for the certification of three diesel engine models, including the Land Cruiser 300 and HiAce, which are used in the affected models.
Impact on Production and Vehicle Volume
Approximately 36,500 Toyota vehicles produced monthly will be affected by the suspension, highlighting the scale of the issue. The company clarified that the affected engines and vehicles meet performance output standards, assuring users that there is no need to discontinue their use.
Admission of Data Manipulation and Broader Irregularities
In a separate statement, Toyota Industries admitted that its workers adjusted fuel injection amounts to present more favorable data. Additionally, irregularities were reported in the certification process for engines used in forklifts and other construction equipment. Toyota Industries promptly reported these findings to the transport ministry, which plans to conduct independent inspections. This revelation follows a recent suspension of shipments by Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu, intensifying scrutiny on testing practices within the automotive industry.
