Students Demand Dean’s Resignation Following Tragic Student Suicide at NIT Silchar.
Students at the National Institute Of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam, are taking a stand against the alleged mistreatment and role of the Dean of Academics in the recent tragic suicide of a student. This incident has sparked a wave of protests and demands for justice on campus.
Demand for Dean’s Resignation Grows
The protests that began early in the morning at 7:30 am have gained momentum, with students demanding the immediate resignation of the Dean of Academics, BK Roy. The focal point of their agitation is the unfortunate death of Koj Buker, an Electrical Engineering student from Andhra Pradesh, who was discovered dead in his hostel room on September 14.
Allegations of Harassment and Injustice
According to fellow students, Buker had been subjected to relentless humiliation and was even prevented from attending classes during his fifth semester. The Dean of Academics, BK Roy, allegedly insulted him in front of his peers, further exacerbating his distress. Last Friday, tensions reached a boiling point as students clashed with the police during a heated protest, resulting in a lathi charge and injuries to 40 people.
“We want justice for Koj Buker and compensation for his family members. Koj was mentally and physically strong. He was not a drug addict. The NIT Silchar administration has given false allegations against him which were not justified. They said he was mentally unstable and a drug addict, which was totally false,” exclaimed one of the protesting students.
Calls for a Thorough Investigation
In addition to the Dean’s resignation, students are demanding a high-level inquiry by external experts into the circumstances surrounding Buker’s suicide. Many believe that the combination of academic pressure and personal hardships, including the loss of his mother and academic backlogs, led to the tragic outcome.
According to a third-year student from the Electric Engineering department, “He had appealed to the authorities to conduct a special examination so that he could clear the backlogs, but the administration didn’t listen to his request and tore up his application.” The classmates revealed that Buker had faced six backlogs in his first-semester exams, conducted online in 2021 due to the pandemic and the lack of internet connectivity at home during the Covid lockdown.
As the protests continue to escalate, the students are determined to seek justice for their friend, Koj Buker, and to shed light on the alleged injustices and pressures faced by students at NIT Silchar.
