Sriram Raghavans Merry Christmas: A Gripping Thriller Unfolds with an Unlikely Duo, Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi
Sriram Raghavan, the master storyteller behind the acclaimed “Andhadhun,” returns with his latest cinematic venture, “Merry Christmas.” This suspenseful thriller, a departure from the conventional, teams up the unlikely duo of Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, offering a gripping narrative that delves into uncharted territories of deception and death.
Unlike the hurried and patchy narratives of many contemporary films, “Merry Christmas” takes its time to unfold, presenting a slow burn that keeps the audience hooked with its intriguing storyline. While some may argue there are moments that lack intensity, the film manages to captivate viewers without becoming tedious. It’s the type of cinema that demands viewers to sit back, absorb, and analyze deeply.
Based on Frédéric Dard’s “Le Monte-charge,” the screenplay of “Merry Christmas” opts for a smooth and easygoing approach. The twists and turns unfold organically, though they may lack the over-the-top wow factor that Raghavan is known for. While “Andhadhun” had audiences standing in awe at each revelation, “Merry Christmas” slightly underplays these moments. The climax, although nail-biting and experimental, falls short in terms of both writing and storytelling.
The narrative follows Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) on a fateful Christmas Eve in Mumbai, where he becomes entangled in a crime scene after meeting Maria (Katrina Kaif). The film weaves a delirious romance into a murder mystery, offering delectable moments, such as the impromptu dance sequence on Christmas Eve. The cinematography, lighting, and background score play a crucial role in emphasizing key sequences and building tension.
Raghavan cleverly incorporates references to classic films and veteran actors, adding a nostalgic layer to the narrative. The use of props, such as the mixer grinder and spectacles, contributes to the storytelling, turning them into important characters. The dialogues may not be extraordinary, but the subtle humor, particularly in Vijay Sethupathi’s delivery, adds charm to the film.
The standout performances come from Vijay Sethupathi, who effortlessly embodies his character, and Katrina Kaif, who brings a restrained yet mysterious presence to the screen. The supporting cast, including Sanjay Kapoor, Tinnu Anand, Vinay Pathak, Ashwini Kalsekar, and Pratima Kazmi, provides commendable support to Raghavan’s mystery universe. Radhika Apte’s brief cameo is also worth mentioning.
While “Merry Christmas” may not be entirely unpredictable, keen observers may spot cues leading to the big reveal. The climax, though out-of-the-box and experimental, may leave some wanting more. Despite these minor drawbacks, the film is a must-watch for appreciating good cinema, brilliant writing, and an engaging narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat. In the end, it’s Sriram Raghavan’s cinematic world, and “Merry Christmas” deserves at least one viewing.
