Star India’s batsman, Suryakumar Yadav, clinched the title of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20I Cricketer for 2023, marking his second consecutive year receiving this prestigious recognition.
Throughout 2023, Suryakumar showcased his dominance in the 20-over cricket format, amassing an impressive total of 733 runs in 17 innings. His stellar performance boasted an average of 48.86 and an extraordinary strike rate of 155.95.
Despite a slow start in the year, with a meager seven runs against Sri Lanka, the 33-year-old swiftly turned the tables. He bounced back with scores of 51 (36) and a phenomenal 112* (51) in the following two matches.
Consistently delivering noteworthy performances, Suryakumar contributed with scores in the 20s to 40s until a standout innings of 83 (44) against the West Indies. He capped off the series against the West Indies with a commendable knock of 61 (45).
In a testament to his prowess, Suryakumar was entrusted with leading the young Indian side towards the end of the year.
His leadership was accompanied by remarkable batting displays, including half-centuries against Australia (80 off 42 balls) and South Africa (56 from 36 balls). The pinnacle of his batting brilliance came in the form of a century against South Africa, achieved in just 56 balls during their final T20I of the year in Johannesburg.
A standout moment in Suryakumar’s performance was his unbeaten knock of 112 runs off 51 balls against Sri Lanka, a innings embellished with 9 sixes and 7 fours.
Notably, Suryakumar’s century against Sri Lanka stood out as the second-fastest hundred for India in men’s T20Is, trailing only behind skipper Rohit Sharma’s 35-ball effort against the same opponent in 2017.
