Shami Backs Indian Tourism Amid Maldives Row, Emphasizes Support for PM Modi’s Initiatives
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has weighed in on the ongoing controversy in the Maldives, expressing his support for Indian tourism and encouraging fellow citizens to explore the picturesque Indian beaches. Shami’s comments come amidst a dispute sparked by a remark made by a Maldives minister and other public figures following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the union territory of Lakshadweep.
Shami, in an interview with ANI, urged the promotion of tourism within the country, emphasizing the positive impact on everyone, regardless of the prevailing circumstances. He commended the Prime Minister’s efforts to propel the nation forward and called for collective support. Several other sports personalities joined Shami in condemning what they deemed ‘racist’ remarks from Maldivian figures, encouraging their compatriots to discover the beauty of Indian coastal destinations.
Following their historic victory in Cape Town, South Africa, the Indian cricket team is gearing up for a five-match Test series against England scheduled to commence on January 25 next year, starting with the first Test in Hyderabad and concluding with the fifth and final Test in Dharamshala on March 11.
Shami revealed that he is not contemplating adopting new techniques for the upcoming tour, emphasizing his focus on fulfilling the responsibilities assigned to him. Confident in his performance, Shami stressed the importance of mental preparedness and fitness, particularly in familiar home conditions. He highlighted the evolution of perceptions about the Indian team, noting that it is now recognized as both a batting and bowling powerhouse.
While the England Men’s selection panel had announced a 16-player squad for the series, featuring four spinners and three uncapped players, India is yet to unveil its squad for the highly anticipated contest.
