Senior Congress leader Dr. Karan Singh expressed deep concern on Wednesday regarding the recent surge in terrorist activities in the Jammu region. He pointed out that terrorists, who previously focused on the Kashmir valley, are now shifting their attention to Jammu.

“There is no doubt that it is a matter of grave concern. For years, terrorists executed their actions in the Kashmir valley. With great difficulty and courage, they were brought under control…It seems that now they have started focusing on Jammu,” Singh remarked.

Dr. Singh also proposed the reattachment of the Jammu Division of the Army with the Northern Command located in Nagrota, instead of the Western Command. He believes this change would create a more unified and efficient military response.

“We have lost several of our jawans and people in the last 6 months… This is a very serious matter…This means that the administration doesn’t have full control over the situation. This should not happen…I have a suggestion: Jammu Division of the Army has always been with Udhampur–with Northern Command. A few years ago, it was separated and attached to Western Command, which is quite far away from Jammu…I am not an expert but I think if it is brought to Nagrota again, it will be one single unit,” he stated.

On Tuesday, July 16, four Indian Army soldiers, including an officer, were killed during an encounter with terrorists in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. “Four Indian Army soldiers, including an officer, have been killed in action during an encounter with terrorists in the Doda area of Jammu and Kashmir. The operations are still going on,” defence officials reported.

A joint operation by the Army and Jammu and Kashmir police was launched on Monday evening, following an exchange of fire with terrorists in the Dessa area of Doda. Additional troops were called in to tighten the cordon.

In another incident on Monday, July 15, Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered old-rusted arms and ammunition from a terrorist hideout in the Reasi district. The recovered items included 30 rounds of AK-47, one AK-47 rifle magazine, and one HE-36 hand grenade.

This increase in terrorist activities comes amid recent attacks in the Jammu region, including the assault on an army convoy in Kathua and encounters in Doda and Udhampur.
