The highly anticipated sci-fi film “Kalki 2898 AD,” directed by Nag Ashwin and featuring Prabhas and Deepika Padukone, has a new release date. The magnum opus is set to hit theaters on May 9, 2024, as announced by the production banner Vyjayanthi Movies on their social media pages last Friday. Accompanying the announcement was a striking new poster showcasing Prabhas, with the caption, “The story that ended 6000 years ago. Begins May 9th, 2024. The future unfolds. #Kalki2898AD.”

Initially slated for release on January 12, the multilingual big-budget film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani. Prabhas shared the poster on his social media, expressing, “The countdown to the future has begun! #Kalki2898AD in theatres worldwide on 9th May 2024.” Amitabh Bachchan joined in by sharing the film’s poster with the updated release date on his Instagram.

Originally known as Project K and greenlit in 2020, “Kalki 2898 AD” promises to transport audiences to an unprecedented world in Indian cinema. Nag Ashwin, discussing the film as a standalone project at an event held at IIT Bombay last month, stated, “This will be India’s K. It’s India’s Project K, India’s Kalki. It’s one film, and I think that’s enough.”

The film’s official title was revealed as “Kalki 2898 AD” at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) in July 2023. The first glimpse showcased Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Prabhas in a futuristic setting, portraying them as warriors in a war-like scenario. Nag Ashwin previously expressed his excitement about the film’s potential global impact at the SDCC, stating, “India is the home of some of the greatest lore and superheroes ever written. We feel that our film is an attempt to bring out and share this with the world. And Comic-Con gives us the perfect stage to introduce our story to a global audience.” The film is produced by Aswini Dutt, the founder of Vyjayanthi Movies.
