SC Adjourns Umar Khalid’s Bail Hearing
The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of the bail plea filed by former JNU student Umar Khalid in a UAPA case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the North-East Delhi riots in February 2020. The hearing is rescheduled for January 31. Umar Khalid challenged a Delhi High Court verdict from October 2022 that denied him bail. He argues that he had no “criminal role” in the violence and no conspiratorial connection with other accused. Khalid was arrested by Delhi Police in September 2020 and faces charges under various sections, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Umar Khalid Challenges Denial of Bail
Former JNU student Umar Khalid has approached the Supreme Court, challenging the Delhi High Court’s denial of bail in a UAPA case related to the North-East Delhi riots. The High Court verdict from October 2022 refused Khalid’s bail, stating he had no criminal role in the violence and lacked conspiratorial connections with other accused. The Supreme Court adjourned the hearing to January 31 due to Justice Bela M Trivedi’s prior commitments.
