Russian Strike on Ukrainian School Distributing Humanitarian Aid Kills 26, Kyiv Says

KYIV, November 3, 2026 (VoM News): At least 26 people were killed in Russian strikes on a school distributing humanitarian aid in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainian authorities said, hours after a local ceasefire in the south ended without reported violations.

Acting regional governor Mykhailo Semikin said the victims included two rescue workers and four police officers. The attack targeted a village near the Kherson region, with several aerial bombs striking the school as residents gathered to collect assistance.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces first struck when people arrived for aid distribution and then carried out a second attack targeting the shelter. Emergency service footage showed the building reduced to smouldering rubble as rescuers searched the site.

The attack followed a rare ceasefire around the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, brokered to facilitate a humanitarian evacuation. The truce began Tuesday and ended Sunday, with neither side reporting breaches. Kyiv accused Moscow of using the pause to strengthen its positions, an allegation Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not deny.

Peskov described the fortification of positions during pauses as normal practice and called the Oleshky evacuation mission successful. The operation enabled civilians to move to Ukrainian-controlled territory and Russian-annexed Crimea.

Meanwhile, US-led talks between Moscow and Kyiv are scheduled for November 10 and 11 in Abu Dhabi, according to US special envoy Steve Witkoff. Both countries also reported cyberattacks targeting emergency warning applications following the ceasefire’s expiry.
