Restoring Statehood of JK Alone Won’t End Militancy: Farooq Abdullah
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah stated on Wednesday that merely restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood would not put an end to militancy unless it is accompanied by active public support.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah questioned claims that militancy is fading, pointing to recent violent incidents. “Even if statehood is restored, will militancy end? Those who say it’s over should look at the recent attacks,” he said, citing the recent loss of two soldiers in an IED blast as evidence of continued security challenges.
He emphasized that public cooperation is crucial for lasting peace and economic stability. Highlighting the pressing issue of unemployment, Abdullah stressed, “Our children are jobless. We need peace to address these problems.”
Shifting focus to national politics, he weighed in on the recent Delhi Assembly elections and the performance of the INDIA bloc. He suggested that a pre-poll alliance between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress could have influenced the election results. He further urged the bloc’s leaders to engage in deeper discussions to refine their electoral strategies moving forward.
Abdullah’s remarks underline the complexity of restoring normalcy in J&K, reinforcing that long-term peace requires both political decisions and grassroots support from the people.
