Re: The Most Affordable States for Car Owners in 2024
- A new study reveals the cheapest states for car owners, by calculating the most common expenses when it comes to owning a car.
- Ohio is the cheapest state to own a car in, considering its low price for insurance, money spent on gas, and speeding fines.
- Alabama has the lowest average speeding fine of 20$ out of all the 50 states.
J&Y Law did research on all 50 states, and revealed the cheapest states for car owners. It is ranked by a composite score, based on insurance prices, gas money, repairs and the average speeding fine for each state.
Here is a short summary
Ohio is the cheapest state to own a car in. With a composite score of 47.95, it has good prices for insurance ($1485 for full coverage and $406 for minimal coverage) and repairs of $381. Ohio’s key to being the cheapest state is offering low costs for all expenses.
Idaho holds the second place in this ranking with a composite score of 49.56. It has lower insurance prices than Ohio ($146 difference in full coverage and a $61 difference in minimal coverage). At the same time its average speeding fine of $34 is around 4.5 times less compared to Ohio’s fine of $150.
Vermont holds the third place, but with a score of 49.59 is a very close contender with Idaho. Vermont and Idaho are very similar states with only one exception. Its average speeding fine of $90 is around 2.6 times more than Idaho.
Iowa holds the fourth position on this list, and has a composite score of 50.05. It has a pretty low minimum insurance coverage of $324, and the average money spent on gas of $2039 is the lowest by far.
Wisconsin got fifth place in the list, and with a composite score of 50.56. Wisconsin has a higher price for minimum insurance coverage of $419, compared to Iowa’s $324.
Indiana takes the sixth place, and has a composite score of 50.87. Along with Wyoming, it has the highest average speeding fine of 200$.
North Dakota holds the seventh place. It has a composite score of 50.88. North Dakota’s average speeding fine is 78 % lower than Indiana.
Maine takes eighth place, with a composite score of 51.05. It has the third highest gas price of $2399, on average, but it’s still similar to other states when it comes to other expenses.
Wyoming holds the ninth place. It has a composite score of 51.17. This state offers the lowest price for minimal insurance coverage of $263, which is around 37% cheaper than Wisconsin.
Alabama holds the 10th place in the ranking, and has a composite score of 54.26. It has the lowest speeding fine of 20$, out of all the states.
A spokesperson at J&Y Law commented on the research. “A lot of speeding fines’ legality can be put under question, and the person guilty of one’s car damage isn’t always the owner. This means that the expenses for owning a car can be much lower, if the unlawful acts lose power, and the people responsible for damages take care of repair expenses”.
Methodology: J&Y Law did research on all 50 US states, calculating the average minimal and full coverage for insurance, average money spent on fuel (annually), average cost of repairs and speeding fines. Later, a formula was made, by analyzing all these variables and creating a composite score system (the higher the number, the more expensive car ownership is).
