Rajouri’s Mohammad Yasser Wins Gold at Sub-Junior National Boxing Championship
JAMMU, Aug 13: In a proud moment for Jammu and Kashmir, 14-year-old boxer Mohammad Yasser from Rajouri has clinched the gold medal at the 4th Sub-Junior National Boxing Championship, held in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, from August 6 to 13.
A trainee of the Khelo India Boxing Centre, Rajouri, Yasser exhibited exceptional grit, discipline, and technical brilliance throughout the championship. Competing in the 52-55 kg weight category, he registered five consecutive victories before defeating Nelson Khwairakpam of Manipur in a thrilling final bout to emerge as the National Champion.
Yasser’s achievement carries even greater significance considering his personal journey of resilience. He lost his father six years ago and has since been raised by his mother, Nasim Akhtar, who works as a domestic help in local households to support her family. Speaking to local media, she said with tears of joy, “I didn’t even know he had won until someone came and told me. We don’t have a mobile phone at home. Yasser is very hardworking and this is all due to his dedication and focus.”
His coach, Ishtaq Malik, a former national-level boxer, has been instrumental in shaping his career. The victory has sparked celebrations in Rajouri and across the Union Territory. Veteran boxer and former Divisional Sports Officer, J&K Sports Council, Rajan Sharma, hailed the feat as a “moment of immense pride for the entire UT.”

Yasser’s gold medal not only brings glory to J&K but also highlights the immense, untapped sporting talent in border and rural regions—showing that with guidance, resilience, and support, champions can rise even from the toughest circumstances.
