Rahul Dravid to Lead Team India as Head Coach until T20 World Cup 2024, Confirms BCCI Secretary Jay Shah

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that Rahul Dravid will continue as India’s head coach until the upcoming T20 World Cup in June 2024. Dravid’s contract had initially ended after the ODI World Cup final last year, but he was requested to continue his role, along with other support staff, for the South Africa tour in December-January without a finalized tenure.

Shah revealed that he had an initial discussion with Dravid before making the decision to retain his services until the ICC T20 World Cup, which will take place in the West Indies and the USA. Speaking on the sidelines of the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium renaming function, Shah mentioned that due to Dravid’s immediate departure for the South Africa tour after the 2023 World Cup, they hadn’t had a chance to meet until now.

Addressing concerns about Dravid’s contract, Shah asserted, “Why are you worried about a contract for such a senior person like Rahul Dravid? Rahul bhai will remain the coach in the T20 World Cup.” However, he indicated that further discussions would take place before the marquee event.

Shah acknowledged the busy schedule of back-to-back series, including South Africa, a T20I series against Afghanistan at home, and the ongoing series against England. He mentioned, “I will speak with him whenever there is time.”

Regarding workload management, Shah emphasized that IPL franchises must adhere to the guidelines set by the BCCI for centrally contracted players. “This is the BCCI’s mandate. The BCCI is the supreme body, and whatever it decides, the franchises will have to follow – we are above the franchises,” he asserted.
